You’ve probably heard the buzz—literally. Bee news has been making the rounds on Curaçao. But don’t panic! Like with everything in nature, it’s important to stop, think, and understand what’s really going on.
Yes, there are bees on the island. And that’s actually a good thing! Bees are essential for a healthy ecosystem. So if you’re out hiking or enjoying nature and hear buzzing, stay calm. Don’t make loud noises or sudden movements. Try to see if the sound is coming from a nest. If it is, keep your distance—just like you would with any wild animal. Bees will only become defensive if they feel their home is being threatened.
It’s not like you’re at risk of bee attacks everywhere on the island. Unfortunately, there have been a few recent incidents. In one serious case, a bee colony was accidentally disturbed when their hive was damaged. Naturally, the bees reacted to protect their home. It’s unfortunate for the people involved.
So here’s the takeaway: be smart when you’re out in nature. Don’t let fear or panic take over, and please don’t assume that Curaçao has suddenly become dangerous. Whenever you step into nature, remember—you’re entering the home of many creatures. Respect that, and you’ll usually be just fine.

Am I likely to encounter them when visiting in late March? To what extent do you think? I’m very afraid unfortunately so I know it will ruin my trip a bit if I for example have even one buzzing around me when trying to eat meals on patios/outdoors all the time….would shete boca be somewhere I’m very likely to see a lot of them? TY so much for your help!!!
